Maestro Luciano Pavarotti once was asked in an interview how he could maintain his powerful voice over a 30 year career. His response was something like this, only in Italian, "I sing like a baby cries for it's bottle." He sang in his most powerful and natural voice. When you hear Pavarotti, you know it is him. He sang in his own voice, never trying to copy someone else's. Take a lesson from Pavarotti and be yourself.
"But what if I don't like my voice?" You say.
I say, any voice can be trained so as to bring out the best sound. Also, consider Bob Dylan. He doesn't have the most beautiful voice, however, you recognize his sound immediately as Bob Dylan. His strength is in the song lyrics and the performance. Uniqueness doesn't come from the quality of the voice, it comes from the delivery.
Copying another artist will not make you stand out and it certainly won't make you better. Being yourself will. Your best voice is your own voice.
